Ecotourism: Tourism evolution 2011-07-25
|
During the 1980s, when on survival training in the wildernesses of Pakistan, Nepal and Kenya, conducted by the Adventure Foundation of Pakistan, I defined it as: “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing behind but footprints.”
In the mid-nineties, due to an upsurge in the awareness of the negative effects of mass tourism on previously sheltered local communities, I added to the definition: “… and ‘adding’ value to the locals as compensation for breaching their privacy and stealing a look into their cultures and lifestyle.”
Now it has been redefined as “visiting natural areas with the objectives of learning, studying or participating in activities that do not negatively affect the environment; whilst protecting and empowering the local community socially and economically.”
Holding true to my current definition, I embarked on my recent journey to the east coast of Thailand, a place thriving on ecotourism. My destination was the Faasai Eco Resort — which would be the base of my eco travels in the serene location of Kung Wiman Peninsula.
Welcoming me upon my arrival was the owner of the resort, who volunteered to take me on a tour of the resort. We walked through a veritable jungle, the backyard of the resort; a result of the owner’s careful planning.
The place appealed to me so much that after a quick nap I was back in the forest exploring the abundant variety of fruit trees and its spice garden, and I also managed to stumble upon a mineral water lagoon. Surrounded by the wilderness I could hear the gushing stream which flows with plenty of fish; a fact that also makes it a haven for a large variety of birds. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace — I felt at one with Mother Nature, as clichéd as that may sound.
While surveying the area we also visited a neighbouring orchard, where trees were laden with longan (dragon eye fruit), jack fruit, pineapple and durian. Chanthburi is the renowned capital of durian, the king of fruits in South East Asia which is also well known for its foul smell, quite like that of gym socks after you have sweated it out, unfortunately.
The resort was filled with eco-friendly surprises on the inside, too. Instead of taking a dip in a regular chlorinated pool, you shall find yourself wading in a mineral-rich pool of water fed by an underground spring.
The resort also boasts of a leisure forest trail which takes you over a hill to a secluded beach. On the sublime beach with a rocky shoreline, away from the hustle and bustle I had left far behind, I felt truly blessed.
Overcome by a feeling of fulfillment, a thought crossed my mind: “Would this place ever be the same if more and more people started visiting it and interfering with its unspoiled beauty?”
Awakening me the next morning was the sound of nature — the chirping of birds and the pitter-patter of a drizzle. I hit the road once again sustained by a wholesome meal of cereal and coconut juice. We drove a few kilometres from the Resort to Hua Laem Fishing Village, located at the foothills of the Cardamom Mountains, to observe the local fishing community. This was an opportunity to experience a simple lifestyle where people sustain themselves from the natural offerings of the sea.
Confirming my worst fears, I was informed that owing to the increasing number of visitors the fishermen had started supplementing their insufficient income by offering tourists accommodation at their homes. Some of the locals had also attempted to improve their sanitary facilities to cater to the tourists — a deathblow to the rural lifestyle. Disturbed by this trend that altered the natural order of things, I turned and distracted myself with the beautiful view of the nearby White Water Lake.
For my third and final day at the resort, on a quest to extract the ultimate from my eco-travel experience, I travelled deeper into the forest. I start my expedition by driving for an hour and a half to the Khao Chamao National Park. The museum at the entrance has an interesting display of forest ecology and wildlife within the park area — a great way of getting acquainted with the wildlife within the park.
The Park is divided by its two primary features; the main topography which includes the Khao Chamao forests and the Yad Khao Pan Tee, standing at a daunting height of 1024 metres. The fertile, moist, evergreen forest features many natural attractions; a large variety of trees, natives of the area, waterfalls and caves. The area along the Prasae River is a sanctuary for wildlife, home to all sorts of mammals, amphibians and reptiles. If you’re lucky, you can catch glimpses of elephants, crown gibbons, sea cows, barking deer and a wide variety of bird species.
This is the true feel of eco-tourism, the passion for which brought me to this place. It is an opportunity to be in sync with nature; to admire its beauty without tainting it; to appreciate its offerings without spoiling it and to cater to the survival of its inhabitants without contaminating it.
Today, however, this new buzzword has attracted many people; some wanting to contribute to ‘green’ travel and some wanting to make a quick buck off it. To ensure that you are in for a good eco-travel experience always be sure to distinguish ‘green’ tourist traps from the genuinely eco-friendly ones. Thankfully, there are still some people out there who are genuinely concerned for the future of healthy tourism, tourism that depends on sustainability and preservation.

TOURISM INDUSTRY HAS POTENTIAL TO REVIVE ECONOMY 2011-07-25
|
There are many countries in the world like Switzerland, Holand and Sri Lanka whose main source of income based on tourism industry but unfortunately Pakistan, despite having rich culture, heritage and tradition and blessed by spectacular mountains, lush green forests, glaciers, lakes, rivers, ocean, ancient monuments, valleys. fertile plains and all natural gifts that can make a country a hub for tourists, could not attract foreign and local tourists on the back of insurgency across the country, bomb explosions throughout country, travel advisories by foreign governments asking their respective citizens to avoid visiting Pakistan, unfavourable political conditions, lack of proper infrastructure and last but not the least ever rising inflation.
It is to be noted that before 9/11 era, significant number of tourists used to visit Pakistan after visiting Sri Lanka, Nepal and India. According to Ministry of Tourism, in 2001, before the 9/11 attacks, 1,400 foreigners headed to northern area for trekking. However, in 2002 only 99 mountaineers ventured to Pakistan. Afterwards, heightened security fears and travel advisories issued by foreign governments asking their citizens to avoid visiting Pakistan proved to be a bang blow for local tourism and resultantly foreign tourists arrival in Northern Areas became almost zero. The deteriorated law and order situation in the country now has reached such a point that even local people were displacing to other safe areas where they could earn their livelihood.
Stuck in conflict between Afghanistan to the West, Kashmir to its northeast and bleeding with violent Islamic militancy on its home front, Pakistan has now become a tourist-hungry country rather it became a tourists hub and a resort for local travellers who can spend a lot of money for watching landscape and scenic beauty of lush green mountains and crystal clear river water flowing.
It would be not out of place to mention here that before the regime of Musharraf when Pakistan was, though, not politically stable but there was no insurgency and people were living in peace and tranquillity, global tourists who landed in sub-continent to visit Nepal to climb Mount Everest, India to watch historic Agra tomb, Sri Lanka to feel cool breeze blowing at its beaches and Pakistan to witness natural heaven in Swat – a replica of Switzerland but September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the United States and the subsequent US-led military campaign in neighbouring Afghanistan have virtually scuttled tourist traffic to an Islamic country which has four seasons and virtually put country’s tourism industry in a shambles.
A chain of bloody terror attacks by Islamic militants has not only kept away the local tourists but also foreign who can spend a lot of money in exploring nature. With the steep down tourism industry in Pakistan, foreign mountaineering expeditions have also been dropped up to zero mark, claimed a leading climber adding that now over one million people who attached with tourism sector and living in the Northern Areas are facing a bleak future. Since their mainstay was tourism so they are living near starvation because of dwindling flow of visitors, he added.
It is an open secret that Nepal, a land-locked country, has only one big attraction – world highest Mount Everest which is a main source of income for the country. Pakistan’s wonders are also its mountains as five of the world’s highest peaks, over 8,000 meters, all in a 20-kilometer radius, situated in the Northern Areas where three of the world’s most fabled mountain ranges meet: the Himalayas, the Karakorams and the Hindu Kush.
Second only to Mount Everest in height, there is a K-2 mountain in Pakistan. Though Pakistan has had another 120 peaks tower over 7,000 meters but still no foreign group has booked climbing mission in the current year because of insurgency and fear of life threat. As a result, now porters, the guides, drivers, hotel owners which attached with these foreign tourists are suffering badly and have almost reached at the brink of their financial collapse.
It is to be noted that once the Northern Area of Pakistan was considered to be the safest place where crime rate was lowest as compared to the other parts of the country and local couples used to visit to enjoy their honeymoon but, it seems that the whole area has been haunted as neither local nor foreign tourists dare to visit because of fear. The local people, though, supported government stance and fought against militants as they knew well that tourism is their bread and butter but still the circumstances are not favourable for tourism. They are still struggling against insurgency and wanted complete peace and tranquillity to come back in the region so that tourism could once more emerge and they could earn their livelihood once again.
If Sri Lanka that faced insurgency for three decades can attract global tourists, why not Pakistan which has natural Switzerland in the shape of Swat, Shangrila and Hunza.
Though, US is supporting Pakistan in this regard and USAID has disbursed working capital and rehabilitation cash assistance of $1.158 million under its Malakand Grants Programme among 239 hotels and 22 fish farms but still there is a room for government to remove hindrance in attracting tourism. First of all government has to give life assurance to tourists as global tourists think that Pakistan is an unsafe place after the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Punjab Governor Salman Taseer. On the other hand, infrastructure in Pakistan is a great cause of tourism industry failure. It is hard fact that there are no proper roads, railway tracks and other transportation services. Tourists find it difficult to visit different places in Pakistan. It is claimed that poor infrastructure is a main hindrance in the way of developed and flourished tourism industry.
Government has to take special measures for providing relief to tourists if it wants to boost tourism industry in Pakistan. It is quite possible to attract foreign tourists to Northern Areas once again if government shows its interest and will. Only a little bit attention on the part of government can make this country once again a hub of foreign and local tourists and eventually can make it economically sound if insurgency is uprooted from the country once and for all as Pakistan has already been ranked 39th in the world for ground transport infrastructure.

Disaster after disaster equals no tourism ministry for Pakistan 2011-06-27
|
Vote for Save Tourism Industry of Pakistan
Pakistan is a country that is facing its worst conditions ever regarding its tourism industry. First, it was the great tragedy of 9/11 that dented the tourism industry, and then in 2005, a horrific earthquake collapsed the total tourism infrastructure in Kaghan valley, and this was followed by the Taliban capturing the beautiful Swat Valley. These disasters were followed by year 2010 bringing the floods that wreaked havoc with the entire tourism sector. Now, there is no tourism ministry left in Pakistan, and no tourism ministry means no tourism department and no tourism minister.
ESP Board including its President Raza Nadir and Secretary Hasnain Khan have decided to raise the voice of tourism industry within country and at international forum to save tourism industry from total disaster. The Region Initiative--- a networking of tourism organisations of 10 countries of South Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe has also strongly criticised the situation. Visit www.theregionaltourism.org to know about its position on this issue.
ESP appeals stakeholders of tourism industry to strengthen our hands by joining us in this cause to save tourism. Send us your mail at esp@comsats.net.pk We need 100 mails to submit Presentation to UNWTO, World Tourism Foundation, President and Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Such a situation is amazing, and the country's people look to the government of Pakistan, which has no respect for tourism, although Pakistan had been a paradise for tourists.
It should be mentioned that the federal Ministry of Tourism was abolished under the constitutional requirement that ensures transfer of the tourism ministry to the provinces. However ,lack of interest by the government, coupled with interprovincial departmental problems and no parallel system ,has ended the restart of the tourism sector before it has even had a chance to begin.
There have been provincial tourism ministries in Pakistan for the last 2 decades, but these ministries cannot register or look after the tourism industry, because such powers were placed only with the federal Ministry of Tourism government of Pakistan. The publicity and promotion of the country was also a responsibility of the federal ministry. No federal ministry has indicated that there would be any desire or demand to promote Pakistan as a country on the global map of tourism.
For the time being, the Government of Pakistan has placed membership and participation in the International organizations/events and International / bilateral Agreements on Tourism under the Economic Affairs Division which will be doing it part time as they have many other sectors (in addition to Tourism) of the economy to look after. So the priority for Tourism will be very low.
Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) is well designed to look after such specific job but they are planning to wind up this 40 years old organization as well. On the other hand, the provincial tourism organizations have not yet developed their capacity and their job will specifically be (and should be) to develop and promote tourism for their respective provinces.
A number of appeals have been sent to the President and the Prime Minister of Pakistan and several parliamentarians. The Chairmen of the Senate and National Assembly Standing Committees on Tourism, The Chairman of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) and the President of the Pakistan Association of Tour Operators (PATO) also appealed to the Prime Minister not to devolve Tourism to the provinces and to keep at least one tourism organization at the Federal Level. The UNWTO, UNDP and the Pakistan Ministry of Tourism/PTDC jointly prepared a Master Plan for Tourism Development in Pakistan, which recommended to restructure and strengthened tourism organization at the Federal Level.
But all of our efforts gone waste as the Parliament, under political pressure and motives, passed and amendment in the Constitution under which the subject of tourism is to be only looked after by the Provinces only.

Pak-China border opening heralds a revival of tourism industry 2011-05-01
|
Gojal- The Pak-China border was opened for all types of tourists and logistic services between the two countries here on Sunday.
Both the khunjarab security force (KSF), the Pakistani security force responsible to look after the border and their Chinese counterparts were present at the border that opened the gates by formally cutting of the band.
Owing to the harsh terrain and the extreme weather conditions on both sides of the border, the khunjarab pass, a gateway connecting the two countries remains closed from December to April.
Reopening of the road this year has left the business community scratching their heads as the kkh still remains closed due to the Attaabad Lake, the artificial lake formed due to land slide last year that completely submerged 15 kms of the KKH cutting Gojal valley, the gateway to china from rest of the world. The valley still remains stranded although boat service had been provided for the area in the immediate aftermath of the Attaabad disaster.
The disaster brings a dual with it as the lake adds to the list of tourist hotspots that Gojal, known as the museum of glaciers in the world of tourism offers for visitors.
Though the lake remained largely unnoticed by tourists last year due to the floods that swept the country from the mountains of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to the plains of Indus basin in Sindh besides the militancy menace caused a huge loss to the local tourism industry.
The country is recovering from ruins of the flood that left hundreds homeless and depriving thousands from their valuables and the situation of law and order is improving with each passing day.
Giants of the local tourism industry are of the view that the year will witness a revival of the tourism industry as the seasons start serves a good omen with globe trotters turning to the high valleys and mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Nazir sabir, the renowned mountaineer said the tourism industry is witnessing a revival this year and expressed his optimism in the future of the tourism industry. “we are having a good start this year that has given hope and confidence to the thousands of people whose income in affiliated with the industry” he added.
He said due to the harsh weather conditions during the winters the tourism industry in Gilgit-Baltistan is a “‘Six-month phenomenon.’ “Tourists start mounting Pakistan during the summers usually besides its quite difficult for mountaineers to do the job in winters” he added.
Aziz, a hotel owner from Gojal while talking to this scribe said his hotel remained literally closed for over two years. “the start of the season has given me hope and I am quite happy to have guests from around the globe back to my hotel” he added. He said the tourist season had a good start and has brought back what he called ‘the fast wilting hope’ of the people whose future is associated with the industry. We are rising from ruins” observed.
The government has set up a special department realizing the potential of tourism in the region. An official of the gilgit-baltistan tourism department said the government was planning a number of initiatives for promotion of tourism in the region. “As we have a good start this year, the government is planning a number of initiatives for promotion of tourism” he added. He said the tourism department was in touch with the tour operators for the betterment and improvement of the tourism industry in the region.

Investors urged to explore tourism 2011-04-11
|
ISLAMABAD - The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry Saturday urged investors to tap the full potential of tourism inside Pakistan and was blessed with rich potential for almost all types of tourism.
SAARC, Economic Cooperation Organisation and Organisation of theIslamic Conference could serve as appropriate platforms to improve tourism growth by linking member countries through cultural, religious, social, regional, socio- economic and educational ties Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) President Mahfooz Elahi has said, while presiding over a meeting here.
He was of the view that local and foreign investors could be attracted by organizing special events, trade fairs and cultural events. "There is a dire need to repel the existing image of Pakistan as a violent state and efforts should be made at all levels to present Pakistan as a country of peace," the ICCI President stressed.
Citing the examples of Brazil, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia and Turkey, he claimed that these nations became prosperous through tourism, adding the same approach was needed in Pakistan for rapid growth of tourism. He underlined that the government should actively promote the tourism industry to boost its foreign exchange earnings and finance the import of capital goods necessary for the growth of manufacturing sectors in the economy.
